Ward J. Collins Jr., age 75, of Linton, passed away July 14, 1998 at Hanover Nursing Center in Hanover.
Born April 10, 1923 in Anderson,he was the son of Ward J. Collins Sr. and Florence E. (Pulliam) Collins Goodwin.
He was employed and Citizens Gas & Coke Utility in Indianapolis from 1950, retired in 1984. He was director of underground storage & exploration & development. He was an independent consulting geologist after retiring from Citizens Gas. He was one of the pioneers in the field of underground gas storage. When he began his exploration and development for this method of storing natural gas in naturally occurring underground rock formations (reservoirs). The idea was merely a theoretical discussion in the industry. He was one of the geologists in the first world to make the theory actuality. He remained one of the leading experts in the field after his retirement. While working for Citizens Gas, he found, explored and developed multiple gas storage fields in Greene County & found, Plummer Oil Field in Greene County. His work resulted in connecting the gas storage fields
in Greene County to Indianapolis via a pipeline in 1960. In 1980 President Carter recognized him as one of the 25 leading experts in the oil and natural gas industry.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Linton & was a delegate to the Annual Conference for several years.
He was a T/Sgt. in the U.S.Army Air Force during WW 11. He was a Flight Engineer on the B-24 Liberator Bomber Crew of the 451 st Bomb Group based in Foggia, Italy. He flew 15 bombing missions over Italy, France, Germany. Austria, Romania, & Greece. He received the Air Metal.
Distinguished Unit Badge, EAME Ribbon with 6 Battlestars. American Campaign, European Theater, WW 11 Victory & Good Conduct Medals.
He was a 1941 Graduate of Anderson High School and received a Bachelor of Science (Geology) Degree in 1949 from Indiana University.
He is two daughters, Kathleen Collins Barnes of Linton; Carice Collins Krieg of Indianapolis; one son, Arthor W. Collins of Lawreneeburg; four brother; Charles M., Newell P., Jackson E., Kenneth Collins. three sisters; Evelyn Collins, Adkins & Patricia Goodwin Walls both of Florida.
Also surviving are several Grandchildren.
Preceded by his wife, Margaret I (Shirley) Collins, July 31, 1987. Whom he married June 12, 1946, a brother Michael Collins,& his Parents.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Methodist Church in Linton, Rev. Richard Russell officiating.
Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Friend and may call from 1-9 p.m. Friday at Welch & Cornett Linton Chapel & after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church.
The family requests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church through the funeral home. Ward is buried at Fairview Cemetry, Linton, Indiana.
The Linton American Legion & VFW will conduct military graveside services.
