US Congressman. He studied law at Troy, was admitted to the bar in 1845 and commenced to practice law in Trenton, Tennessee. He was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives (1847-48), served in the Tennessee State Senate, (1855-56) and was elected attorney general for the sixteenth judicial circuit of Tennessee, in 1858. During the Civil War, he was a Major in the 12th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry, Confederate Army. After the war, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second Congress, serving (1871-73). Not a successful candidate for re-election, he resumed the practice of law in Trenton, Tennessee, until his death at age 63.
