U.S. Congressman. He attended Dandridge Academy, graduated from Maryville College, in 1840, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1848 and commenced to practice law in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He engaged in agricultural pursuits and was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, (1851-52). In 1859, he was elected as a candidate of the Opposition Party to the Thirty-sixth Congress, serving until 1861. Not a candidate for re-nomination he resumed the practice of law and agricultural pursuits. During the Civil War, he defended Union civilian James J. Andrews who was facing court martial for leading the raid known as the Great Locomotive Chase in 1862. He also opened his home to the wounded Confederate soldiers following the Battle of Stone River, in 1863. He died from typhoid at age 45.
