U.S. Congressman. He attended the Old Philomath Academy, the law department of Cumberland University, was admitted to the bar in 1871 and opened a legal firm in Gainesboro, Tennessee. He was a delegate to all Democratic State conventions, (1872- 1916) and Attorney General for the fifth judicial circuit of Tennessee, (1894-1902). In 1905, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-ninth Congress, serving until 1907. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he continued the practice of law until his death at age 67.
