US Congressman. He attended East Tennessee University, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1848 and commenced to practice in Athens, Tennessee. He also engaged in agricultural pursuits and was Attorney General of Tennessee, (1849-60). At the start of the Civil War in 1861, he was elected as a Unionist to the Thirty-seventh Congress, but was arrested by Confederate troops while en route to Washington, D.C. Taken back to Tennessee, he was held prisoner for more than a year, when he made an escape, went to Washington, D.C. and assumed his seat in the House of Representatives. He served in Congress until he enlisted in the Union Army as a Captain on March 3, 1863. He was discharged as Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 10th Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry on December 29, 1864. After the war, he was appointed circuit judge of the Fourth Judicial District of Tennessee and served until 1867. He died at age 47 in Athens, Tennessee.
