Emory C. Hoover, 94, of Longview, Texas, went to be with the Lord on April 29, 2011. He was born August 21, 1916, in Morristown, Tennessee, the son of late Ethel and Marshall Hoover. He was the oldest of 10 siblings.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, enlisting on May 8, 1942 at Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga. His papers show him to have had four years of high school, to have been a 'retail manager' and that he was single. His Army serial number was 34282734. He was assigned to the 455th AAA Battalion, which formed in Sept. 1942 at Camp Stewart, Ga. He was to become a member of Battery 'D' of the 455th. The unit trained at Camp Stewart & Ft. Benning, Ga. then went overseas in Sept. 1943 to spend 10 months in Norfolk, England, guarding the Watton airbase from German air attacks. In July 1944, the unit was assigned to the Third U.S. Army under the command of General George S. Patton, Jr. in Normandy and followed the Third Army, XX Corps, across France, Germany, and Austria. The unit shotdown/damaged over 130 German aircraft (#2 scoring unit in all of Third Army). He returned home with the 455th in Oct. 1945. Photos and deck logs proved that he was with the unit for the entire War. He also attended 455th reunions in Nashville, TN, after the War. His rank at the end of the War was PFC.

On June 14, 1947, he married Opal Juanita Spurrier, who survives.

In October 1950, he further served in infantry combat during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge on November 18, 1951, at Fort Hood, Texas, he went on to establish the "Hoover Tire Company" in Longview, Texas, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Longview, Texas for 64 years. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Juanita Hoover; daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Danny Perkins of Gladewater, TX; son and daughter-in-law, Emory Jr. And Leigh Hoover of Hoboken, NJ; grandchildren, Deana Lott; Lacy Alejandro, Holly Phillips; Emory (Trip) Hoover III, and Sarah Hoover; and brothers, Bud and Ray Hoover of Morristown Tennessee; and sisters, Ann Tickle, Florence Stubblefield, and Peggy Litz of Morristown, Tennessee. In addition, he is survived by 7 great-grandchildren. Mr. Hoover was preceded in death by his brothers; Vincent, Glenn, Ralph and by his sister: Mary Lillian.
