2nd Lt. Duke was a member of the 431st Fighter Squadron, 475th Fighter Group.
He was attempting a single engine landing at a Bomber Strip at Mareeba, Queensland, Australia. His engine was feathered. The belly tanks were not dropped. When the wheels were lowered, the plane began to lose altitude and crashed 5 miles north of Mareeba at Biboohra at 1605, August 9 1943. Cause of death was multiple internal injuries and cremation. He was initially buried at the US Cemetery at Townsville, Queensland, Australia. He was reinterred in Mississippi in 1948.
