U.S. Congressman. He graduated from South Carolina College, in 1809, studied law and was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law at Beaufort, South Carolina, in 1822. He was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1813-15, 22-25) and served in the South Carolina State Senate, (1826-31). In addition, he was commissioner in equity for Beaufort District in 1831, when elected as a Nullifier to the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Congresses, serving (1833-37). After his term, he was collector of customs at Charleston, South Carolina, (1841-53). He died in retirement on his plantation at age 74.
