Bruce Bevan, a resident of the South Bay for 85 years, was born on August 1, 1918 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at the age of 92. Bruce spent most of his life in Torrance and Redondo Beach. He often told stories of riding across town on the red car and spending time at the beach. At 24, Bruce joined the United States Navy and served in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945. Bruce had many jobs - from welder to machinist to commercial fisherman. In the early 1950s, at the urging of his father, he joined the ILWU local 13 and was a longshoreman until he retired at the age of 63. Bruce enjoyed people. He loved having his friends around to share a meal or watch American Idol or a Laker/Dodger/Angel game on TV. Even to the end, Bruce was surrounded by and cared for by people dear to him. He was a member of the Long Beach Church of Christ, and he loved and was loved by his church family. Bruce's wife of 52 years, Esther Marie, preceded him in death in 1999. He will be missed by many: a daughter, Lynda Diane Kyker; grandchildren, Elizabeth Kyker and Wayne Kyker; and great-grandchildren, Zachary and Alec Kyker; as well as a host of family and friends. Funeral services will be Monday, May 2, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the mortuary chapel, with interment to follow in Green Hills Memorial Park. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
