US Congressman. Born in Amherst Township, Minnesota, he moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in 1890, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1893 and commenced to practice law. He was a member of the board of education of Sioux Falls (1908-18), president of the board of directors of the Union Savings Association in 1912 and a member of the South Dakota State House of Representatives, (1912-16). In 1919, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-sixth Congress and to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving until 1933. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law, served as the South Dakota State administrator of the War Savings (1941-43) and as executive manager of the State war finance committee in 1944. He died at age 80 in to Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
