MANKATO - Vivian Halsted Jensen, of Mankato, Minn., formerly of Brainerd, and more recently Plymouth, died Dec. 5, 2007, at ISJ Hospice, Mankato, Minn., after a brief illness.

Vivian was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; parents; sister, Donna; brother, Lewis; and granddaughter, Michelle. She is survived by daughters, Beth, Minneapolis, Priscilla (Tom) Northenscold, Plymouth, Rebecca (Duane) Rader, North Mankato, Roberta (Jerry Breiter), Mankato, and Rachel (Paul) Mueller, Mankato; grandchildren, Kirstin Northenscold and Anna Northenscold, Chessa Rader and Ryan Rader, Dominic Breiter, Madeline Mueller and William Mueller; brother, Charles (Norma) Halsted; sisters, Kay Dahlgren, Margery Quinlan and Virginia (Don) Peterson; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Vivian was born May 18, 1927, in Cloverton, Minn., Pine County, to Myrtle and Charles L. Halsted. The Halsteds moved to Brainerd in 1929 and opened Halsted's Grocery Store. Charles L. Halsted was a Minnesota state representative for more than 20 years. He was the DFL candidate for governor of Minnesota in 1948.

Vivian graduated from Brainerd High School in 1945 and from Brainerd Junior College in 1947. She moved to Minneapolis in 1947 and was employed at Northwestern Bank.

Vivian married Frank D. Jensen on June 20, 1948. They moved to Mankato in 1954 where Frank began his dental practice. They raised their five daughters in Mankato where they resided until 1990.

Vivian was active in First Presbyterian Church in Mankato, as a deacon and church circle member and as a co-founder of the handbell choir.

Vivian was active in First Presbyterian Church in Mankato, as a deacon and church circle member and as a co-founder of the handbell choir. She was a member of PEO, Jaycees and Toastmasters and a Camp Fire Girl leader. She was an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society for 25 years and was a charter member of Reach to Recovery (for breast cancer survivors). She helped organize the Mankato chapter of Reach to Recovery and was district coordinator for southern Minnesota. She received the Sertoma award, in 1982, for her many years of volunteerism.

In Mankato she worked for the U.S. Census, Mankato Heart Health Program and ISD No. 77. Vivian was an avid reader, bird watcher, seamstress and family genealogist. She loved games, jokes and spending time with her family. She will be remembered for her beautiful, warm smile and loving concern for everyone she met.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, Dec. 10, 2007, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 220 East Hickory St., Mankato, Minn. Private interment will be in Brainerd, Minn. Arrangements are being handled by Landkamer-Johnson-Bowman of Mankato and Nelson-Doran Funeral Home of Brainerd.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Minnesota Medical Foundation for Cancer Research at P.O. Box 65001, St. Paul, MN 55164.
