U.S. Congressman, War of 1812 U.S. Army Officer, Attorney. Born in Savannah, Georgia, he was named for General Nathanael Greene, whom his father served under during the Revolutionary War. He moved to New York City with his family when he was a child in 1796 and graduated from Columbia College in 1813. Pendleton offered his services to the U.S. Army during the War of 1812 and was commissioned as an officer as aide-de-camp to General Edmund P. Gaines and served from 1813 to 1815. After the war, he returned to New York, studied law, and was admitted to the bar. He commenced to practice as an attorney until he moved to Ohio in 1818. Pendleton settled in Cincinnati and resumed his legal profession. In 1819, he was chosen as the City Attorney. He married Jane Frances Hunt in 1820, the daughter of Jesse Hunt, a Revolutionary War Veteran and Ohio pioneer. Pendleton was elected to the Ohio State Senate in 1825, reelected in 1827, and served until 1829. He was the president of the Cincinnati City Council from 1832 to 1833. Elected as a Whig to represent Ohio's 1st District in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1841 to 1843. He declined to become a candidate for renomination in 1842 and retired from public life. He died in Cincinnati in 1861 when he was 67 years old. His father, Nathaniel Pendleton, was a Revolutionary War Officer and a Federal Judge. His son, George Hunt Pendleton, was a United States Senator, Congressman, and Governor of Ohio.
