Hulda was born in Mangwitz, Kreis Butow, Prussia a.k.a. Mangrailz, Provinz Pommern, Germany and died in the town of How, Oconto, WI.

Hulda arrived at the port of NY, on October 21, 1882. She traveled on the vessel Donau. She emigrated from Bremen, Germany. Ferdinand, Johanna and Robert were on the same vessel. They all stayed in the steerage compartment. There were 969 passengers on board. Most of them from Germany. Hulda is listed as : NO. 488 -Hilda - 11- female - from Germany.

1900 Federal census of WI - NO. 208 -
Town of How, Oconto County - Gustav owned a farm in the Town of How, Oconto County; came to US in 1882PA. (Naturalization applied for), was married for 14 years, and had 5 children, 4 were living. Hulda's arrival in America was listed as 1882. They could both read, write and speak English.

From 1790-1922, wives and minors of naturalized men automatically became citizens. They were granted "derivative" citizenship. This is how Hulda became a US citizen.

Gustav and Hulda were devout Christians. They attended church regularly. They had morning and evening devotions with their family at which time they sang hymns, read the Bible and prayed in German.

Hulda enjoyed wild berry picking and fishing in the Oconto River on River Road, reached by walking across the farms. She was often accompanied by grandchildren and her sister-in-law Emma, next door. She knitted many mittens and stockings from wool that she spun on her spinning wheel from the sheep that she and Gustav raised on their farm.

After Gustav's death in 1932, Hulda continued to live in her apartment. Hulda suffered from a stroke and died in her bedroom on the evening of August 7, 1941. Her granddaughter Ruth, found her on the floor. It happened to be grain threshing day on the farm. a coffin was purchased from the undertaker in Suring and Hulda's body was laid out in the coffin in the home. Relatives and friends gathered, brought food and flowers. The next day the funeral director came with the black hearse and took the body to the church for the funeral and burial at the church cemetery.

Hulda came to America at age 15 and lived in NY, for a few years. After marriage, Hulda and Gustav settled on a farm in the Town of How (Oconto County, WI) and farmed in that area until his death. After Gustav's death Hulda lived with her son Fred who lived on the family farm. About three weeks prior to her death, Hulda suffered a stroke from which she had never recovered. Hulda had been ailing for some time prior to the stroke.

Names and spellings of birthplaces were taken from marriage records. Hulda and Gustav raised Caroline Pethke as their own child. Caroline was Huldas's niece - - her brother August's daughter.
