Named Operation Silver Bayonet I (it occurred from the 9th to the 18th of November in 1965) la Drang was the first major battle between regulars of the United States Army and regulars of the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN/NVA) of North Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
This battle was well documented in a variety of mediums: a CBS special report: Battle of la Drang Valley by Morley Safer, a book: We Were Soldiers Once... And Young by Harold G. Moore and Joseph L. Galloway and in a 2002 motion picture was made based on that book: We Were Soldiers, starring Mel Gibson and Barry Pepper.
Although Ismael may not be portrayed specifically in any one of those 3 accounts, the story of that battle is the story of his ultimate sacrifice.
