US Congressman. Born in Marion County, Indiana, his family removed to Platte County, Missouri in 1837, where he was locally educated. In 1853 he graduated from Harvard Law School, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and was admitted to the Missouri State Bar Association. In 1856 he was appointed as Attorney of the District of Missouri, and later he was named as a Judge of the Common Pleas (serving in that role from 1868 to 1872). He was involved in a number of mercantile pursuits, financing and developing the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, and establishing a bank in St. Joseph, Missouri amongst other endeavors. In 1882 he was elected as a Democrat to represent Missouri’s 4th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1883 until his death in office in 1889. His son, Daniel Dee Burnes, would also go on to represent Missouri’s 4th District in Congress during the 1890s.
