Lawyer, Politician. Served in the United States Army during World War I (1914-1918). Johnson was a Member of the Democratic National Convention from West Virginia in 1917 and a Delegate to the Democratic National Convention from West Virginia in 1924. From 1949 to 1950 he served as President Harry S. Truman's U.S. Secretary of Defense.
