Samuel Manassah Edwards was born in Tipton, England on May 14, 1888. He married Jane Keay on November 19, 1912 and they produced children Vincent, Violet, and Frances.

Samuel, Jane, and Vincent left England in 1923 and came to Joliet, Illinois where he worked as a boiler operator at Joliet Township High School, and as a furnaceman at U.S. Steel.

In late 1938, Samuel fell acutely ill after an unrelated accident in the steel mill and died of stomach cancer on January 21, 1939 in Joliet.
