President of Syracuse and Utica Railroad and the Michigan Central Railroad Company. He donated to the New York Central Railroad the land between Geddes and West Streets and Fayette Street and Erie Canal for their rail yards. He gave the city of Syracuse its name and was its first postmaster. He gave railroad passes to fugitive slaves wishing to flee the area.

The funeral of the late Hon. John Wilkinson took place from his residence on James street yesterday afternoon. The services were conducted by the Rev. Samuel J. May The funeral was attended by a very large number of citizens and many prominent strangers who were in the city, by many of the members of the bar, and by the officer of several city institutions in a body. The remains were deposited in Oakwood Cemetery, of which he was a Director and one of the original founders.
