Earl the son of Clifford Jennings and Nettie Jennings of Tulsa OK, entered service (Selective Service) in the US Marine Corps on March 2, 1966 in Oakland CA. Arriving for duty in Vietnam he was assigned to Company L, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During Operation DESOTO a squad on patrol north of An Lac hamlet in Duc Pho District Quang Ngai Province was fired upon with small arms mortally wounding PFC Jennings.
