While the stepmother lay at the Corvallis hospital recovering from premature birth of the afternoon, little Elliott Purmont Greene, son of Rev. Clinton Jennings Greene, fell down a stairway at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Herse last night and was so badly injured that he died shortly after - a startling announcement that shocked the entire community beyond expression this morning.

When Mrs. Greene was taken to the hospital yesterday afternoon, the neighbors and friends offered to take care of the three children, the twin boys, Elliott and Joseph (Jay) going out in the country to stay with the Herse family. The boys were five years old and last day of June and full of pep and life and spirits. Mrs. Herse had them ready for bed, was tucking Jay in and calling to Elliott, who was in the same room, to climb in with Jay. In a spirit of play, however, he dashed out the room into the hall leading downstairs. Down these steps the little fellow plunged headlong, breaking his clavicle and thrusting the broken end thru his lung.

His death is a terrible shock to the father who has had charge of the children most of the time since their mother's death exactly three years before, on June 20th.

Elliott had won a place for himself in the hearts of his Sunday School associates and their parents because of his quaint, whimsical, originality and faith.
