Edgar E. Barber, 81, Decatur jeweler for 39 years, died at 2 pm yesterday in St. Marys hospital. He lived at 743 W. Main street. Mr.Barber was born April 21, 1866 in Springfield, the son of Elam and Lucia Clark Barber. He began learning the watchmaker's trade when he was 16 years of age and worked at the trade in Springfield for 10 years.
In 1892 he opened his own jewelry store in Sullivan. After 17 years in Sullivan, he came to Decatur to open the E.E.Barber Jewelry co. in the 100 block N. Water street. A landmark in downtown Decatur has been the tall sidewalk clock which Mr. Barber had installed outside his store more than 30 years ago.
The jeweler was a member of the First Methodist church, a charter member of the Stephen Decatur lodge 979, AF and AM, the Masonic chapter in Sullivan, Beaumanoir Commandery, No 9, K.T. Decatur and the Ansar Shrine of Springfield.
He leaves his wife, the former Sadie Nelch whom he married in Springfield, Sept. 5, 1888, two sons, Harry E., who now runs the jewelry sore and William of Springfield, a sister, Mrs. Ella Eades of Los Angeles, Calif. and three grandchildren. Two daughters preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be conducted in the Monson funeral home with burial in the mausoleum at Fairlawn cemetery.
