U.S. Congressman. Successful in agricultural venues, he was Sheriff of Burlington County, (1854-57), a member of the New Jersey State House of Assembly (1859-61) and president of the board of trustees at Pennington Seminary, for ten years. In 1873, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third and Forty-fourth Congresses, serving until 1877. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his agricultural pursuits until his death at 72.
