Mary Ann Sullivan was born March 1, 1864 in Lockport Township to Andrew and Mary Waters Thompson. She married Mortimer (meat-cutter/butcher) and they begat Mabel (1893)and Alma (1896).

Mary Ann lived on Ridgewood Avenue in Joliet from 1892-1956, raising her daughters by herself after Mortimer was killed in an EJ&E freight yard accident his second night of work in 1913. Understanding how necessary an education was, Mary Ann insisted that both her daughters graduate high school, an unusual occurrence at that time.

Mary Ann would live to see Alma have five sons and a daughter and five great-grandchildren had come along by the time she died of pneumonia on April 28, 1956.
