According to the History of Springfield, VT by C.H. Hubbard & J. Dartt, pp; 578, 580, 583, 593 William Lockwood was one of the first settlers in Springfield. He gave land for a burial ground and the cemetery was named the Lockwood Cemetery, according to information on his son Jacob Lockwood's Revolutionary record. According to the former city attorney, at some point the cemetery's name was changed to Day Cemetery. In the Town Office it is referred to as the Day Lockwood Cemetery.

William acted in the capacity of patriotic duty during the Revolution. He was an elected Civil Officer on the Committee of Safety, for the Town of Springfield, VT: 1778-1782. His patriot number is A071102.

William and Sarah were married in 1751. They had the following children: Abraham m. Lydia Pollard, Sarah Sawtelle; Isaac, Joseph m. Lydia Whitman; Jacob m. Esther Field; Henry m. Esther Smith, Clarissa Newton, Sarah Schofield, William Jr. m. Asa/Achsa Barnes, Benoni m. Mary Williams, Ruth m. Benjamin Olney, Lydia m. William Weaver, Damaris (Dimes) m. Daniel Avery, Sarah m.
