Cheryl Bickford passed away April 20, 2011 at age 87.
She was born October 2, 1923 in Bellingham, to Walter W. and Mae Reasoner Smith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle Bickford, and brother, Don R. Smith.
Cheryl is survived by her sister-in-law, Frances Smith and nephew, Steven R. Smith.
Cheryl and her family lived on Lake Whatcom. She attended the Campus School at Bellingham Normal School. After high school, she enrolled at Western Washington College of Education. During that time she met Lyle, as they had the same piano teacher. They later married and made their home in Seattle.
She was an elementary school teacher in the Shoreline School District. She remained in touch with many students, as well as student teachers.
Cheryl was a member of several organizations and always played an active role. She belonged to Sno-King School Retirees and served on the selection committee for high school seniors planning to go into education. She also was a member of the Women's University Club where she enjoyed tap dancing classes and played bridge. She served on many committees, most recently proofreading the monthly newsletter.
Cheryl was a member of the Daughters of the Pioneers of Washington, following in her mother's footsteps. She played the piano for the opening of the monthly meetings. She also shared stories relevant to pioneer life and checked the obituaries daily for the names of members. She was President of the Seattle Chapter 1990-1998 and State President 1994-1996. May 10, 2011 is the 100th Birthday Celebration of the organization of the Daughters. Cheryl was the Registration Chairman. She also belonged to President's Forum and served on the Executive Board.
Cheryl liked watching sports: cheering for UW football and basketball teams, Mariners and Seahawks. She also liked shows on KCTS 9 and was a long time member. If you stopped by her house you'd often hear jazz or classical music playing. For several years she attended Seattle Symphony concerts with friends.
Special thanks to all of Cheryl's friends throughout her life who often included her in holiday gatherings. Thanks also to King County Senior Services who cheerfully drove her to her medical appointments.
