John Justice Batchelor was born in 1868 in Dundee, Scotland. He was a merchant seaman. He first married Robina Duncan (1867-1898), daughter of James Millar Duncan and Agnes Abercrombie. Robina had gone to Singapore in the early 1900s with her parents. She married John Justice Batchelor and had four children: Elizabeth, Robina, James, and John Justice.
John and Robina lived in Singapore for awhile and Robina died and was buried there. John subsequently married his second wife, Laurestina Gurney and they had two children Jack Rhoo and Zaida. John died at the age of 43 on June 25, 1912 and was buried in the Bangkok Protestant cemetery in Bangkok, Thailand.
