Clarence Rutledge Dies at Age 103
Clarence A. Rutledge, 103, of Edgewood, formerly of Springfield, died 10:38 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 19, 1997) in his home.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Pagel Funeral Home, Edgewood, with visitation 11 a.m. Wednesday until service time. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery with military services by Keeler-Adams American Legion Post 1168, Edgewood. Memorials: donor's choice.
Mr. Rutledge was born Feb. 6, 1894, in Martin, Tenn., the son of Benjamin F. and Mollie Cate Rutledge. He was retired from the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Railroad as a car inspector in 1962. He was a charter member of the DAV in Springfield and member of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen of America in Springfield. He was a World War I Army veteran serving with the Indian Head Division. He married Virginia B. Miller on April 20, 1932, in St. Louis, Mo. She preceded him in death Jan. 7, 1996.
Surviving are his sons, C.L. "Lee" and wife Debbie of Edgewood; John Michael "Mickey" of Effingham; daughters, Mary Edith Unkle of Rome, N.Y.; Mrs. Eugene "Bud" (Velda L.) Bringaze of Belleville; Mrs. Gail (Marilyn) Compton of Paris; Mrs. David (Marlene V.) Gant of Decatur; Mrs. William (Sharon K.) Sanderfield of Corona Hills, Calif.; Karron G. Bingman of Effingham; 24 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, infant son, John C, brothers, Lee, Will, John, Leonard and Charles, sisters, Flora Long, Mary Damron, Clora Cox and Jessie Rutledge, and one great-grandchild.
