John Lloyd Vandenberg, 69, of 1401 Biscayne Drive, a retired professional engineer, died Wednesday.

Mr. Vandenberg had spent 24 years with the federal Bureau of Public Roads at Little Rock and at Albany, N.Y. He also worked with the state Highway Department in its planning and research division for five years.

He received his civil engineering degree from Michigan Technological University at Houghton in 1933, and moved to Arkansas in 1935 as an engineer with the federal Agriculture Department.

He was an operations officer in an engineering construction battalion during World War II, and later retired from the Army Reserve as a lieutenant colonel.

Mr. Vandenberg was a member of the Mid-South and Little Rock sections of the American Society of Civil Engineers and of the local and state chapters of the National Society of Professional Engineers. He also belonged to Pulaski Heights Masonic Lodge 673, Scimitar Shrine Temple and the Arkansas Consistory, and was treasurer and a member of the administrative board at Trinity United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mada F. Vandenberg; two daughters, Mrs. Ann Colvert of Houston, Tex., and Mrs. Linda Bradley of Ann Arbor, Mich.; two sisters, Mrs. Ester Dirkse of Whispering Pines, N.C., and Mrs. Harriett Compton of Hillsboro, Ill., and four grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Ruebel Funeral Home by Rev. Joseph E. Taylor.

Burial will be in Malvern.

Pallbearers will be A. Francis Wilson Jr., William T. Somervelle, Jim M. Collins, Jack H. Wilson, Bill Looney and Woodrow McKnight.
