Victor Benson, 67, Iron county's representative in the state legislature who died early Wednesday in Lansing, will be buried in Bates township cemetery tomorrow afternoon following rites which will be held at 2 p.m. from the Bates township hall on US-2 at Mapleton.
The recurrence of a bladder ailment sent him to the Sparrow hospital at Lansing six weeks ago and his condition grew critical two weeks ago. He died at 1:15 a.m. Wednesday after several transfusions had failed to check his illness.
The body arrived today from Lansing and will lie in state at the chapel of the John's funeral home until Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. It will then be removed to the Bates township hall.
Rev. Carl I. Fant, pastor of the First Lutheran church of Iron River, will officiate at the services.
PIONEER RESIDENT Mr. Benson was one of the early settlers in Bates township. He was a farmer and livestock breeder since the turn of the century. He came to Bates at the age of 10 years, 57 years ago. In 1900 he was married.
During his residence in the township, he served as township supervisor for several terms and was elected representative on the Republican ticket last November. He went to Lansing after Christmas to take part in the legislative session which began January 2. For the past six weeks, he has been away from his desk in the legislature.
Surviving him are his widow, Hilda; two sisters, Mrs. Carl Mansur of Hollywood, Calif. and Mrs. Emil Jacques of Iron River; a daughter Mrs. Frank Vanderpool of Iron River; and two sons, Walter of Chicago and Norman of Iron River. Other survivors are eight grandchildren.

SEND REPRESENTATIVE The legislature adopted a resolution expressing "deep sorrow" over Benson's death. The house of representatives designated Rep. Charles F. Sundstrom, Democrat of Michigamme, to attend the funeral tomorrow as its representative.
It also selected a committee which accompanied the body from the Lansing mortuary to the train yesterday morning when it was sent to Chicago and on to the upper Peninsula. The body arrived over the Milwaukee road at 6:30 a.m. today.

Victor Benson from Bates Township served the briefest term of all Iron County representatives. He served less than three months of his term, attending his last session March 13 and dying in office on April 26, 1938 [1939] in Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.
Victor was born in Sweden on Dec. 22, 1873, and came to Michigan when he was seven years old. He received his education in the public schools of Norway and Bates. He owned and operated a farm and at the same time gave much time to his community, serving as a township clerk, supervisor for five years and a justice of the peace.
He organized the Iron County Milling Company and served as its president from 1917 to 1920. He was an enthusiastic member of the Townsend Club movement. In 1901 he married Hilda Anderson, and they raised three children, Alpha (Mrs. Frank Vanderpool), Norman and Walter. His children and grandchildren have maintained and continued his community spirit and service.
A Republican, he ran against E. Burr Sherwood, Democrat. In the House, he served on three standing committees: Michigan College of Mining and Technology, roads and bridges, and the State House of Correction and Branch State Prison in the Upper Peninsula.
During his short tenure, he presented five bills. One prohibited any township supervisor from being in the employment of the state Highway Department or of any county road commission. Another provided for the protection of wild animals and wild birds and regulated hunting. A third bill attempted to repeal an earlier act providing for the civil service department and commission, revising some of the provisions. Another dealt with the construction of bridges, viaducts, overheadways, footbridges and wires over the tracks of railroads and prescribed penalties for violation. The last was relative to the tenure of office of state employees.

Hilda, born in Sweden on March 27, 1877, married Victor Benson in April of 1900. They had four children: Isla, Alpha, Norman, and Walter. Hilda died in June of 1966.
In 1900, 32 acres of the original homestead were deeded by Olaf and Kristina Anderson to their daughter and son-in-law, Hilda and Victor Benson. The large farm home and some of the property was sold to Ben and Carl Langendorf in 1923.
