OWEN T. COFFIN, for 24 years Surrogate of Westchester County, died at his home in Peekskill, last night. He was 84 years old.
Judge Coffin was the son of Robert Coffin. He was born in Washington, Dutchess County, on July 17, 1815, and attended a Quaker school until he was 14 years old. Then he entered a school in Sharon, Connecticut, completed his preliminary education at Kinderhook Academy, and was graduated from Union College in 1837. In after life the College conferred upon him the degree for L.L.D.
Mr. Coffin studied law in the office of Rufus Peckham, was admitted to the bar in 1840, in Carmel, and, settling in Poughkeepsie, formed a law partnership under the name of Johnson, Coffin and Emott. Later he became associated with General Leonard Maison, whose daughter he married in 1842. In 1851 he went to Peekskill and formed the law firm of Nelson & Coffin.
He was first elected Surrogate in 1870, on the Democratic ticket. He was renominated and re-elected on the same ticket in 1876, 1882 and 1888. In 1894 he was renominated, but was defeated by Theodore H. Silkman, of Yonkers, the present Republican incumbent.
His first wife died in 1856, and in 1858 he married Harriette Barlow, of New York City.
He leaves a widow, one son, who is a lawyer in Hudson, and a daughter at Peekskill. F.C. Valentine, of Park Hill, Yonkers, was his nephew.
