U.S. Congressman. Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, he graduated from Eastman Business College, engaged in the printer’s trade, graduated from Harvard University in 1888 and taught school. He moved to Wisconsin, was editor of the Superior Evening Telegram newspaper (1890-89), then returned to New York, in 1891. There he was editor-publisher of the Poughkeepsie Eagle and a member of the board of water commissioners of Poughkeepsie. In 1913, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-third Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until he resigned in 1920. President Wilson appointed him chairman of the Committee on Banking and Currency in 1920 and he served until he resigned in 1930. Returning to New York, he engaged in the banking business until his death at age 74 in Chazy, New York.
