U.S. Congressman. While as a school teacher, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1835 and commenced to practice law in Buffalo, New York. He was the Buffalo commissioner of deeds, district attorney of Erie County (1844-46) and Mayor of Buffalo, (1846-47). In 1851, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-second and Thirty-third Congresses and reelected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress, serving until 1857. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
