US Congressman. Elected as a Republican to represent New York's 7th Congressional District in the Sixteenth Congress, he served from 1819 to 1821. DeWitt was born in Marbletown, Ulster County, New York, and attended the Kingston Academy. He was a farmer all his life and his single term in the US House of Representatives was the high point of a sporadic political career. His other public offices were as Supervisor of Ulster County (1827, 1840) and as a member of the New York State Assembly (1839, 1847). He was buried in Houghtaling Cemetery (defunct) on Pine Street in Kingston. Stones from Houghtaling were moved to the Old Dutch Churchyard.
