Johann was born in Kleestadt in Hesse-Darmstadt, an Electorate State of the Holy Roman Empire, which dissolved when he was 2 years old. He grew up in the Grand Duchy that was formed in its place, and emigrated as a subject of a Medieval-style ruler, 20 years before a modern nation called Germany even existed. See son Christian's bio for details of his emigration with wife Christina.
Johann and his family settled a large piece of farmland, but he was also a musician and a carpenter who learned marketable joinery and cabinetry skills from his kinsman George Lux. They ranged as far as Chicago doing jobs for the railroad, mostly finish work in the passenger cars. Follow links to George Lux's bio for further details-- he was Johann's son's wife's father.
