Rhode Island Governor. Born in Bristol, Rhode Island, he engaged in the whaling and mill businesses, plus also served as a Brigadier General in the Rhode Island Militia. He was a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives for many terms and Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island, (1840-46). In 1846, he was elected as a Law and Order party candidate the 19th Governor of Rhode Island and served until he resigned in 1847. After his resignation, he served as a member of the Rhode Island Senate, (1848-50). He died at age 69 in Bristol, Rhode Island.
