obituary (unknown newspaper) Vernon M. Bandel, 91, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000 at Care Center at the Charlestown Retirement Community, Catonsville, after a long battle with heart disease and diabetes. Born April 9, 1909, near Glenelg, he was the son of the late John Harmon Bandel Sr. and Elizabeth Elgert Weber Bandel. He was the husband of Ina Mae Slagle Bandel, his wife of 65 years. He had attended Woodland Primary School No 9 and graduated from the old Clarksville Hight School in 1926. Following high school, he enrolled in the Strayer Business College in Baltimore. After Strayer's, he worked for a short period as a bookkeeper for a small general store and Ford car dealership in West Friendship. He then went back to the family farm full-time and sold produce from the back of his truck. He had sold dairy, poultry, garden and orchard products from his farm to the community. He continued his dairy business until 1968. He was involved in the 4-H Club and was inducted into the Maryland 4-H All Stars in 1934. He was a charter member of the Patapsco Grange 403 and was active for many years in the Howard County Farm Bureau. He was an original stockholder in the Howard County Fair Association and had played a supportive role in the establishment of the Howard Soil Conservation District. He and his wife had resided at the Charletown Retirement Community since Spetember 1986, He was an avid reader. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons V. Allan and Donald M. Bandel, both of Glenwood; four grandchildren; two great-grandsons; a great grandaughter; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother John H. Bandel Jr. and sister Elizabeth "Dora" Bandel Waterman. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Glenelg United Methodist Church, Burnt Woods Road, Glenelg, with his former pastor, the Rev. Clarence Kaylor and the Rev. G. Robert Hottinger officiating. Interment will be in McKendree Cemetery, near Cooksville. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Haight Funeral Home and Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the Glenelg United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
