Attended Carthage public schools graduating Class 1940, then to Unversity of Missouri, roommate of Judge Herbert Castell upon return to college following Coast Guard service during WW II in South Pacific (retired U S Navy Reserves in 1968)

One of Missouri's more distinguished senators, serving in state legislature for forty-two years, from 1948 till death in 1990, first in the house, was youngest speaker ever in 1954, then, 1962 in senate, re-elected minority floor leader in 1984 a seat earlier held by Arkley Frieze, A L McCawley and Allen McReynolds all of Carthage.

Some twenty-five planes flew into Joplin airport for the funeral in Carthage with nearly half the state legislatures attending his service in addition to his many friends, local, from throughout Missouri and from other states.
