Mitchell County "C."

BIOGRAPHY: Phineas Case was born at Cannonsville, in the town of Tompkins, Delaware Co., N.Y., Aug. 11, 1823, being the son of James L. and Betsey F. (Preston) Case. While at home he followed the calling of his father, farming and lumbering, notably running lumber down the Delaware River to Philadelphia, to market.
In 1845 he went to Boone Co., Ill., working on farms during the summer and teaching in the winter. He enlisted at Fort Dearborn, Chicago, in April, 1848, and started for Mexico, but before arriving at the scene of hostilities, the war had closed. At Vera Cruz they were turned back, and discharged at St. Louis. He received a 160 acre land grant from the government, which he located in Franklin township, De Kalb Co., Ill.

James and Betsey moved to Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin (where their son Daniel settled); but James died while visiting back in Cannonsville and is buried in a cemetery that was relocated when the resevoir was put in and flooded the town.
