"James Ransom Cable was born at Amesville, in December 1814, and lived at or near Athens all his life. In his younger years he taught school and afterwards became a farmer in the broadest and best sense of the word, not a plodder, but realizing in some degree the wonderful possibilities of that avocation. He was a buyer and shipper of cattle and hogs. His estimate of weight and values was unusually accurate, so his services as a land appraiser were often in demand. He died at Athens, November 17, 1879."
