Inaja Fire Memorial Monument - The Inaja fire occured in Southern California's San Diego County in the fall of 1956. Before containment after five days, it destroyed 70 square miles, many homes and livestock. It extended from the tiny community of Santa Ysabel to Lakeside 18 miles away and 12 miles from downtown San Diego. A teen admitted starting the fire by throwing a match into some brush to see what would happen. Tragedy resulted at Inaja, a small unoccupied Indian Reservation where a fire brigade became trapped in a canyon. Two reached the top and were able to pull seven others to safety. The remaining 11 men were not as lucky. They were consumed by an instantaneous burst of flame.
