Author and Secret Envoy. In 1846, Edwin graduated from Princeton University. He was a lawyer in New Haven, Connecticut. During the Civil War, he was on a secret diplomatic mission to London and Paris to undermine recognition of the Confederacy. He resided in Europe during the Franco-Prussian War and returned to the United States in 1889. His wife, Mary Louise Ingham, was the daughter of former Secretary of the Treasury, Samuel Ingham.
