U.S. Congressman. He attended Phillips Academy, graduated from Harvard University in 1789, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1792 and commenced to practice law in Peterboro, New Hampshire. He was a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives (1803-08), and elected as a Federalist to the Eleventh Congress, serving (1809-11). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he again served as a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives (1812-14), and resumed the practice of law until his death. His son James Wilson II was also a U.S. Congressman.
