Sister Celeste was one of nine children, three boys and six girls, of Louis and Stella (Petz) Rabaut. She was born July 22, 1914 in Detroit, and given the name Marie Celeste. Sister Celeste attended St. Paul Elementary and High School in Grosse Pointe, Mich. She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1937, taking the religious name of Sister Palmyre.
Sister Celeste earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College and M.S.L.S. (library science) degree from the Catholic University of America. She taught in formal education for six years at St. Matthew and Annunciation in Detroit. In 1945 Sister Celeste began a long-time ministry in the library at Marygrove College where she ministered for 27 years and as Assistant Librarian from 1971 to 1975.
After leaving Marygrove, Sister Celeste assumed the position of IHM Archivist at the Motherhouse in Monroe and, for 18 years, ministered as archivist. During six of those years, in addition to the position of archivist, she was general secretary to the president of the IHM congregation. In 1993 Sister Celeste became assistant to the archivist, and in 2002 she retired. She entered the Health Care Center in 2006 where she resided until her death.
Sister Celeste is survived by her sisters in the IHM community, and her sisters, Carolyn DePorre, Joan Barret, Sister Martha, IHM, sister-in-law, Mrs. Virginia Rabaut and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Rev. Francis Dermott Rabaut, S.J., Louis III, Vincent, and her sisters, Mary Jane Amato and Sister Stella Marie, IHM.
Visitation will be held at the IHM Motherhouse, 610 W. Elm Avenue, Monroe, on Thursday, May 12, from 2 until 7:30 p.m. with a Remembering at 3 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Chapel on Friday, May 13, at 10 a.m. with Rev. William Fisher, OSFS, as presider. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery on the Motherhouse Campus. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Rupp Funeral Home, Monroe. Memorials may be made to the IHM Retirement Fund, 610 W. Elm Ave., Monroe, MI 48162-7909.
