AKWESASNE – Mrs. Mary Lou Phillips, of 92 Hilltop Drive, Quebec, passed away, after a courageous battle with cancer, early Thursday morning, April 14, 2011 at Cornwall Community Hospital, with her loving family by her side.

Mary Lou was born on July 11, 1950 in Bombay, the daughter of the late Harvey P. and Genevieve Leaf Tarbell. She graduated from Salmon River Central School and attended Rochester Business Institute. She also took many courses at St. Lawrence College. On January 17, 1970, she married Terry Phillips at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Francis Arsenault, officiating. Terry predeceased her on July 14, 2006.

In 1971, she began working at the Akwesasne Library and Cultural Center as a library aide. She later went to work for Mohawk Council. She worked in various departments including the Mohawk Language Program, at Kana:takon School and Tsi Snaihne School as a substitute teacher, secretary, and library aide, a home support worker and with the St. Regis Drug and Alcohol Program. In 1987, she finally found a job she really liked at the Mohawk Government Office as a secretary/receptionist, where she remained until her death. She was a former member of the school committee, the St. Regis Recreation Committee and the American Legion Post #1479 Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church. Mary Lou loved to read, especially books by V.C. Andrews, Danielle Steele, Fern Michaels, and John Grisham. She was currently an active member of the Akwesasne Cancer Support Group. She had been a participant in the Allen King Memorial Walk at Iakhihsohtha for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. She enjoyed collecting snow-globes and stars. Mary Lou truly loved spending time with her family at her favorite place, Stanley Island. She loved to watch her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews during the Labor Day holiday, these happy times made the winter months more bearable.

Mary Lou is survived by her two daughters, Connie and Robert Hall and Julie and John Jacobs, all of Akwesasne; her grandchildren, Jacey Hall, Her Treasure; Robert, Her Sweetheart; Quinlyn, Her Darling; Serena, Her Joy; Aryanna, Her Jewel; Taylene, Her Sunshine; Karrah, Her Princess; John, Her Prince; and Cherish, Her Buttercup; a chosen daughter, Cassi Thompson and chosen grandson, Aaron Thompson. She is also survived by her siblings, Maggie and Lawrence Terrance of Rochester; Emily Tarbell of Akwesasne; Mamie David of Akwesasne and Kenny David of Massena; Paula Longboat of Six Nations; Terre and Gordie McElwain of Hilton; Faith Graffis, Charity "Brad" and Wayne Lazore all of Akwesasne; Michael and Nancy White of Akwesasne; Paul and Candi Tarbell of Fairfield, CA; Harold Tarbell and his companion, Renae Morriseau of Vancouver; Wilbert "Buddy" and Gilbert Tarbell; Jose and Alice Tarbell all of Akwesasne; an aunt, Mae Tarbell of Akwesasne; an uncle, Jack Leaf of Akwesasne; her godparents, Martha and Kenny Terrance of Rochester; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition, Mary Lou is survived by her husband's siblings, Allen and Irene Phillips of Connecticut; Sandra Ledoux of Cornwall; Leslie and Florence Phillips, Elizabeth Benedict, Shirley Phillips, Bruce Phillips, and Vaughn and Lynelle Phillips, all of Akwesasne.

Mary Lou was predeceased by her brother, Clifford L. Tarbell on April 11, 1970 in Vietnam; 2 sisters, Sheila White Santiago on February 13, 1990 and Charlene Curleyhead on August 11, 2010.

Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena Saturday and Sunday 1-3 and 5-8 PM, with prayers being said at 7:00 each evening. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday 11:00 AM at St. Regis Catholic Church. Following cremation, burial will be with her husband, in Kateri Cemetery, Akwesasne.
