Retired Carpenter. Son of Benjamin and Polly (Nye) Hafer of Pennsylvania. Preceded in death by wife Sarah, survived by children including two sons.

During the Civil War, Charles served the Union in three different units: as a private for three months in 1861 in Company C, 7th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry; as a private for six months in 1863-4 in Company I, 5th Independent Battalion, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry; and as a Corporal in Company F, 13th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry (January 31, 1864 - July 4, 1865).

Charles spent his last days at the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors' Home in Perkins Township, Erie County, Ohio.
