The Effingham New Leaf, Friday, 13 June 1902
Jacob Beck, one of the earliest settlers of Atchison county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Ostertag in Atchison at midnight Monday night of this week. Old age and Bright's disease were the cause of his death. He had been sick about five weeks. Dr. Beck, as he was known here, was born August 20, 1816 in Alsace, formerly a part of France, but now Germany. He came to America when twenty seven years old, and to Atchison county in 1860, settling on a farm near Lancaster, where he resided until his removal to Atchison fifteen years ago. He had studied medicine and administered to the poor who were unable to employ a physician, but never actually practiced. Dr. Beck laid out the cemetery at Lancaster and was one of the founders of the Lancaster union church. Funeral services were held Wednesday in the church at Lancaster which he helped organize and the remains were buried in the Lancaster cemetery. Rev. Keyser of Atchison officiated.
