In 1853, he immigrated from Germany with his parents and siblings through the port of New Orleans on the ship, Falcon. His future wife, also immigrated on the same ship with her family.

He married Christine Heubaum 17 July 1858 in Gillespie County, Texas and they had a son and a daughter. The daughter, Henriette Auguste (named for Fritz' sister who had recently died), was born 21 September 1862, a month after her father's death. His widow remarried 26 Mar 1864 to Georg Heinrich Gombert in Gillespie County, Texas.

He and his brother Adolph Vater were killed at the Nueces River Battle.
