Johann Gottlieb Kunkel is one of four siblings who emigrated at different times to Texas from the small village of Wenglewo, Posen, Prussia. Gottlieb, wife Augusta Krueger Kunkel, and sister Anna Carolina Kunkel Beyer (Memorial #69722780), arrived in Galveston, on
16 Dec 1860 aboard the bark Gaston. The births are recorded in the records of the Evangelische Kirche Pudewitz (Kr. Posen Ost) Kirchenbuch, 1787-1874.

The oldest brother, John Kunkel, Sr (Memorial #10380946), appears on the 1860 Bastrop Co., TX census with daughter Wilhelmina Ottilie Kunkel, born 1854, in Prussia and daughter Augusta, born 1857, in Bastrop Co., Texas, so his arrival apparently occurred between 1854-1857.

His brother, Christian (Memorial #68969652) and wife Julianna Fechner Kunkel, according to Christian's
29 Dec 1916 obituary appearing in the New Braunfels Herald, arrived in 1856 in New Braunfels, Texas.

Gottlieb Kunkel 's death date is not known. The following is presented to support Gottlieb's final resting place as the Grassyville Cemetery.

An article in the Bastrop Advertiser, Feb 3, 1966, entitled "History of the Grassyville Methodist Church," states "quoted from a document found in the cornerstone of this church: "In the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Seventy Five, the congregation met to discuss the possibility of building a church....Present at this meeting were the following:...."John Kunkel, Sr., Julianna Kunkel, Augusta Kunkel, Gottlieb Kunkel, Anna Kunkel,..."

On 16 Oct 1900, a deed of sale was executed by Augusta, "wife of Gottlieb Kunkel, Deceased" and her children, selling the property in the McCollum tract of Bastrop County. In 1910, she is living with daughter Anna and son-in-law John Boswank in Bastrop County. She is buried, however, in the Kunkel-Behrens plot at Copperas Cove where sons Robert & Otto Julious, and daughter Johanna Behrens are also buried.

There is a remote possibility that the family may have relocated Gottlieb to rest beside his wife at Copperas Cove Cemetery in Coryell County, TX.
