In the early morning hours of July15, the enemy struck the new Marine Combat Base on Tien Dao Hill with a round of 60 mm mortar fire and then a barrage adjusted to the cover the area of the 1st platoon and CP which sustained a direct hit. A probe came on the western side of the perimeter, with a crossfire of enemy small arms fire directed on the Marines ,then the main assault occurred on the south east with the VC penetrating the wire defenses entering the compound and closing with the Marines in hand to hand combat.
This was a well-coordinated attack with a uniformed enemy which indicated it was not just some local force guerrilla group, but a Main unit of the VC. With enemy mortar fire still raining down on them the Marines on Hill 10 were able to hold their own and stall the enemy attack. The attackers were pushed back and withdrew in the darkness with Marine artillery targeting the area around the Marines the perimeter was secured from any further penetration. Marine losses were five men killed and another fifteen wounded, LCpl Calverley was one of the casualties; he was killed in action as a result of enemy rifle fire.
Casualties:
Anthony George Calverley
Robert James Croce - Died of Wounds
Richard Wilfred Demers
Thomas Arthur McConahy
Samuel Lee Reed
Isaiah Herman Wilson
