Recruiter and Captain in the Cavalry of the Tennessee Volunteers, in the Civil War

The Mitchell (Indiana) Commercial, September 20, 1900, page 4
"Dropped Dead
"Captain Charles L. Barton dropped dead Sunday afternoon about 4 o'clock. He had been at church in the forenoon, eaten a hearty dinner and sat with the family chatting during the afternoon and about the hour mentioned started to go into another room when he fell dead. Doctors were hastily called but to no purpose, as life was extinct, the cause being heart disease. Charles L. Barton was a good man, an ardent Christian and a pillar of the Baptist church to which he belonged for many years. He had a good record as a Union soldier, having been Captain of Co. A, First Tennessee Vol. Cavalry. His age was 68 years and since the war he has resided in Mitchell, having engaged in the jewelry business with the late Dr. Samuel F. MARTIN. The Barton family during the last six months has had more to bear than usually falls to one family in that time; first Della Barton PALMER died, then Mrs. Barton's brother at Medora died and Sunday the father and husband. Mrs. Barton and the daughter, Mrs. Perry McBRIDE, and other relatives have the sincere sympathy of all in their terrible affliction.
"Funeral services were held at the residence Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 and the remains were buried in the Mitchell cemetery."

Birth location has been noted as Tennessee, Illinois, Carolina, and Ohio in different documents. Please contact me if you have relevant information. Thank you.
